Justin Cary, Bassist for Sixpence None the Richer, Dies at 50

In Memoriam: Justin Cary, Longtime Sixpence None the Richer Bassist, Dies at 50

Justin Cary, the accomplished bassist who served as the rhythmic backbone for the beloved band Sixpence None the Richer, has passed away at the age of 50.

His passing on Thursday, June 18, followed a recent, severe stroke. The news was shared by bandmate Leigh Nash, alongside a dedicated GoFundMe campaign organized to assist the musician and his wife, Linda, during this challenging period.

Reflecting on their time together, Nash shared a heartfelt tribute on Instagram, stating, “‘We sure had a great time’ is an understatement. Thank you, Justin. We will hold you in our hearts forever. Please keep his wife, Linda—who is family to us—in your thoughts. There was truly no one quite like him.”

A message posted to the memorial fund page confirmed, “Justin transitioned peacefully this morning with Linda by his side. We ask for your continued prayers and strength as we navigate this profound loss.”

Before his passing, Cary had been receiving specialized medical care at Albany Medical Center. Earlier in the week, Nash had reached out to fans, asking for support for the bassist and highlighting his character: “Our brother is so deeply loved. Beyond his undeniable professional brilliance, he possessed a sharp wit, incredible humor, and a resilience that defined him. We are devastated.”

Cary became a vital part of Sixpence None the Richer in 1997, stepping into the role after the departure of J.J. Plasencio. His tenure coincided with the group’s meteoric rise, highlighted by their self-titled album and the global phenomenon “Kiss Me,” which climbed to No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and earned a Grammy nomination.

Beyond the signature sound of Sixpence, Cary was a highly respected session and touring musician, contributing his talents to various acts, including Counting Crows, Jennifer Knapp, and Lee Brice.
