John Cena Comments on the Future of Peacemaker

The start of Peacemaker season 2 looked bleak. Chris Smith, known as Peacemaker and played by John Cena, doubted his place in the lives of his friends. Because of this, the fairly happy ending of the season 2 finale felt suspicious from the start. Then Rick Flag Sr. kidnapped Chris and dropped him on an alien prison planet meant for metahumans like him. That cliffhanger left fans wanting more.

Nearly a year has passed since audiences last saw Chris and the gang, and fans still wonder what comes next. Showrunner and DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has remained pretty cryptic, but Cena provided a more recent update on the status of Peacemaker season 3.

Will there be a Peacemaker season 3?

During an appearance on ‘Happy Sad Confused’, interviewer Josh Horowitz asked John Cena whether he had worn the steel helmet shaped like a toilet since the end of season 2.

“No,” Cena told Horowitz. “And when I put that helmet on, I told James, ‘Dude, I will put this helmet on as long as you need me to.’ I love working with him.”

That admission should not surprise many followers of the series. James Gunn implied that Peacemaker could appear in an upcoming DCU film. Furthermore, Gunn confirmed shortly after the season 2 finale on Peacemaker: The Official Podcast that the finale may be “the final episode of Peacemaker.”

Gunn clarified on the podcast that he believes strongly in the show and its characters, adding that “Peacemaker will be back,” though not necessarily in the format of a television show.

“We have plans, but you’ll see all these characters in the future of the DCU, and not too long,” Gunn said.

Audiences may want more seasons of Peacemaker, but a new season following only Chris and his allies might not happen. As Cena told Horowitz, Gunn has plenty of new characters to manage now that he leads the DCU.

“Because you get the whole box of toys, you have to address the really valuable ones first, and I understand that,” Cena explained. “[…] I got to step back. Let Superman and Batman get their due.”

James Gunn has a massive workload ahead. While Superman achieved major success, Supergirl proved to be a critical disappointment and a setback for the broader DC universe. That outcome sparked intense debate among critics and fans regarding his leadership.

With Superman: Man of Tomorrow on the horizon, Gunn faces considerable pressure. He needs to secure major blockbuster victories to steady the franchise before he can evaluate the possibility of a Peacemaker season 3.
