The Australian music and broadcasting industries are mourning the loss of James Valentine, with high-profile figures—including Jimmy Barnes and Iva Davies—leading an outpouring of tributes for the late musician and presenter.

Valentine, a saxophonist celebrated for his tenure with the band Models and later as a fixture of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s airwaves, passed away at 64. According to reports from the ABC, he died at home via voluntary assisted dying, two years after receiving a cancer diagnosis.

Jimmy Barnes shared a touching remembrance on social media: “James and I have shared a long history. He had a profound love for music; I recall seeing him perform many times with the Models. He was a sharp, witty interviewer, and I will deeply miss his presence on the afternoon airwaves. Rest in peace, James.”

Icehouse leader Iva Davies also issued a heartfelt statement reflecting on a decades-long friendship. “The entire team at ICEHOUSE was devastated to hear of James’ passing. We crossed paths in the early ’80s while touring with the Models. He was a phenomenal musician, and I invited him to contribute saxophone to our Code Blue album, where he brought his signature flair and joy to the sessions.”

Davies added, “His transition into a brilliant, pioneering broadcaster meant our paths continued to cross. He was endlessly engaging, always ready with a great story. He will be deeply missed by thousands of listeners and our extended team alike.”

The members of INXS reflected on their shared time during the iconic 1986-87 Australian Made tour. “We are heartbroken to lose our dear friend James. He was a remarkable human being—constantly positive, caring, and deeply involved in everything he did. Beyond his musical brilliance, he was a dear mate.”

The band noted his multi-faceted career, acknowledging his later work with the group Absent Friends and his success as an author and broadcaster. “His warmth and sharp intellect were beloved by everyone. Travel safe, mate; we miss you.”

Valentine’s career was defined by his seamless navigation between the worlds of high-energy rock performance and thoughtful media commentary. His contributions to the Models’ Out of Mind, Out of Sight helped earn the band international recognition, while his three-decade tenure on 702 ABC Sydney transformed him into a cherished national voice.

Beyond his professional achievements, his legacy was recently honored with an appointment as a Member of the Order of Australia (AM), a testament to his impact on the Australian cultural landscape. He is survived by his wife and two children.
