Following the highly publicized dissolution of her marriage to Ben Affleck in 2024, Jennifer Lopez has embraced a period of profound introspection. Like many navigating the aftermath of a major life transition, the multi-hyphenate star turned her focus inward, reassessing her personal trajectory, choices, and core intentions.
“After my last divorce, I reached a breaking point where I put my professional obligations aside to simply sit with myself,” Lopez shared during a candid appearance on the SmartLess podcast this past Monday. “I told myself, ‘It is time to figure this out. Forget everyone else—there is no one to blame here but yourself.’”
During her conversation with hosts Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes, and Will Arnett, the singer and Office Romance star reflected on a season defined by significant upheaval. Between navigating the high-profile split, managing her children’s graduation, and relocating to a new home, the past few years have been a whirlwind of adjustment.
“My entire world has shifted over the last couple of years,” she explained, noting that the addition of horses to her household was a deliberate effort to create a grounding environment for her family. “The last five years were defined by turmoil, but the last two have been a genuine healing journey. I’ve reached a point where I can finally appreciate my life and the path I’ve built for myself with a sense of genuine happiness.”
Lopez, 56, spoke openly about the patterns that historically led her to feel as though her personal life had “blown up.” She acknowledged that while she takes accountability for her own choices, she is finally beginning to understand the deeper subconscious factors that once drew certain chaotic experiences toward her. “There comes a point where you have to pause and realize that the puzzle you’ve been putting together isn’t fitting for a reason,” she admitted.
Although Lopez and Affleck have moved forward—maintaining a professional rapport following their collaborative work on Kiss of the Spider-Woman—the artist remains characteristically direct about her romantic history. Regarding her past approaches to marriage, she quipped to Jimmy Kimmel last month, “I’ve been doing it all wrong! Believe me, I’ve been doing it all wrong.”
While the private details of their separation remain undisclosed, Lopez emphasized that her post-divorce reflection was a necessary evolution. “It wasn’t about pointing fingers, but rather asking myself, ‘What are you doing? Why is this happening?’ That questioning became my ultimate turning point.”
