Jason Momoa is rapidly becoming the ultimate face of the modern blockbuster franchise. Following his lead role in A Minecraft Movie and stints in heavy-hitters like Aquaman, Supergirl, and Fast X, the actor is expanding his resume with yet another high-profile video game adaptation. Momoa is set to headline the live-action version of Helldivers, a collaborative project between Sony Pictures and PlayStation Studios.

According to a report from Deadline, this project facilitates a reunion between Momoa and Fast X filmmaker Justin Lin. The film has already been staked out for a November 10, 2027, theatrical debut. Originally debuting as a PlayStation console exclusive in early 2015 before making its way to PC, the Helldivers IP from Arrowhead Games chronicles the exploits of elite galactic peacekeepers. These soldiers are tasked with defending “Super Earth” — a satirical, futuristic version of our planet — against relentless waves of extraterrestrial threats.

The franchise reached new heights with Helldivers 2, which launched in early 2024 for PS5 and PC before eventually reaching Xbox Series X. The sequel became a cultural phenomenon, surpassing 20 million copies sold across all platforms. This massive surge in popularity eclipsed the 4 million sales of the original title, cementing the series as a cornerstone of Sony’s gaming portfolio.

Momoa’s casting in Helldivers presents an interesting shift from his previous game-based roles. While he played the eccentric Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison in A Minecraft Movie, he shared the spotlight with Jack Black’s portrayal of Steve. That film’s post-credits stinger even hinted at the arrival of Alex for future installments. Furthermore, Momoa is currently transforming into the green-skinned powerhouse Blanka for the new Street Fighter cinematic reboot. In Helldivers, however, he will likely represent the face of a faceless legion, as the game’s protagonists are typically anonymous soldiers.

Before he deploys to Super Earth, audiences will see Momoa in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. Having officially traded in Aquaman’s trident after his final appearance in 2023’s The Flash, Momoa is transitioning to a new corner of James Gunn’s DC Universe. He will portray the intergalactic mercenary Lobo, a role that seems tailor-made for his brand of charismatic grit. Early trailers showcase a version of the character that is unapologetically brash, armed with a lethal chain-hook and a penchant for cigar-chomping chaos.

While the wait for the Helldivers movie will last until November 2027, Supergirl is set to take flight much sooner on June 26, 2025. Fans looking forward to his return as the flamboyant villain Dante in the next Fast & Furious installment, Fast Forever, will have to be patient, as that project has been pushed back to March 17, 2028.
