At State of Play Japan, Sony unveiled a Japan-exclusive PS5 Digital Edition, fully localized in Japanese. It is set to launch on November 21 and will retail for roughly $350 — about $130 less than the standard local model. Yahoo Japan journalist Meiku Kawamura described the move as “strategically precise, if somewhat unsettling.”
The “affordable, Japan-only” tactic echoes Nintendo’s successful strategy with the Switch 2 and places the PS5 in a similar price bracket to Nintendo’s new console (around $320). Kawamura suggests SIE is aiming to tap into the “shortage-driven demand” for the Switch 2, which remains largely unavailable across much of the country.
By carving out a more accessible niche for the PS5, Kawamura argues, Sony intends to “ignite a console race in Japan for the first time in years.” To date, PS5 sales in Japan have been modest — roughly 7 million units — with the system competing chiefly on technical specs and a premium positioning.
Now, backed by a competitive price and strong performance, the PS5 could draw in buyers, especially while the Switch 2 remains hard to obtain. Kawamura believes Sony’s announcement comes at an ideal moment.
