J.J. Abrams Star Trek Trilogy Arrives on Peacock

JJ Abrams is known for his work on franchises like Star Wars as well as his producing abilities. The Super 8 director uses his nostalgia from growing up to explore classic stories and new ones through his unique lens. You can thank him for co-creating and producing Lost. Even with his status as a filmmaker akin to Stephen Spielberg, he still had to prove his worth before taking on Star Wars: The Force Awakens for Disney. That is how audiences ended up with one of the best reboot franchises of the modern era, heading to Peacock thanks to the writer of Regarding Henry.

The 2009 Star Trek film asked an important question about whether Captain Kirk and Spock started off on the right foot. The Kelvin-verse offered an alternate timeline to the franchise created by Gene Rodenberry. In the original series, Jim Kirk had a family in Starfleet with a supportive mother and father, making his journey to captain of the Enterprise predictable. In Abrams’ take on Star Trek, George Kirk died fighting Nero, and James T. Kirk grew up outside of Starfleet. That changed when Captain Christopher Pike brought Kirk into the academy.

The film resulted in two sequels, the 2013 movie Star Trek: Into Darkness and the 2016 film Star Trek Beyond. Much of the Kelvin timeline’s enduring appeal stems from the cast who brought these characters to life. Shows like Star Trek: Strange New Worlds slowly introduce new actors to play iconic bridge members, but the 2009 film assembled an entirely new team alongside an added bonus. Leonard Nimoy returned to play an older Spock, offering wisdom to Zachary Quinto’s Spock in a touching way for an actor to revisit a beloved character.

A Unique Way of Telling a Star Trek Story

The Kelvin verse did not simply retread the original series and movies. Instead, it selected specific elements to explore to its advantage. Karl Urban delivered a near carbon copy of Leonard Bones McCoy that felt like perfection. Meanwhile, Chris Pine’s Kirk, Zachary Quinto’s Spock, and Zoe Saldaña’s Nyota Uhura offered fresh interpretations. The films also pulled elements from the original movie run, such as Star Trek Beyond incorporating a Genesis Device-style element and planet reminiscent of The Wrath of Khan and The Search for Spock.

This approach made the movies more than mere remakes. They became distinct Star Trek stories that fans continue to want more of, even if a fourth movie remains uncertain. You can experience the Kelvin-verse by watching all three films on Peacock just in time for the 60th anniversary of Star Trek.
