Is Final Fantasy XIV 2.0 in Development? Players Don’t Have Time for Hours-Long Sessions

Naoki Yoshida, producer and director of Final Fantasy XIV, announced at the Paris Fan Festival 2025 that he is seriously considering a complete overhaul of the game. The reason is straightforward.

Modern players spend far less time on MMOs than they did twenty years ago. Where many once devoted 10–20 hours per week, they now often only manage 10–20 hours per month. Work, family and everyday responsibilities have made the traditional model of long-term leveling and months of endgame preparation impractical.

Yoshida emphasizes that a reworked version must provide full satisfaction even in brief 30–60 minute play sessions. Reaching endgame should take less time, and repetitive grind should be reduced to a bare minimum.

The most recent expansion, Dawntrail, was a step forward, but the producer believes progress is too slow. With major update cycles spaced every two to three years, developing an entirely new game can be simpler than continually patching the existing one.

Despite these large-scale plans, Yoshida assured players that the current Final Fantasy XIV will continue to be supported for many years, and that a potential new edition would not result in shutting down the active servers.
