Middle-earth is set for a grand cinematic return in 2027, reuniting audiences with some of the franchise’s most iconic faces.

On January 6, the Gollumgram account on X (formerly Twitter) shared a video featuring Sir Ian McKellen discussing his much-anticipated return to the “Lord of the Rings” universe. In the clip, the legendary actor confirms he is preparing for a new production set in Middle-earth while teasing a few “insider secrets” regarding the cast.

“Filming is slated to begin in May. Gollum is the director, and the entire narrative revolves around him. But I’ll let you in on two casting secrets: the film features characters named Frodo and Gandalf. Beyond that, my lips are sealed.”

Although the actor did not explicitly confirm Elijah Wood’s involvement, fans are speculating a return for the Hobbit star, given his presence at the event alongside other veterans of the original trilogy.

Context suggests this footage was captured during a fan Q&A session back in August 2025 at the “For the Love of Fantasy” festival in London. It was this specific quote from McKellen that originally ignited media speculation regarding the return of the legacy cast members.

As such, the video shared on January 6 provides visual documentation of McKellen’s previous remarks rather than representing a brand-new update.

The upcoming film, titled “The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum,” will be directed by Andy Serkis and is expected to explore events preceding “The Fellowship of the Ring.” The theatrical release is currently scheduled for December 2027.
