How to Breed Pals in Palworld
In Palworld, every Pal is capable of breeding, opening the door to thousands of unique combinations. While the core system is straightforward, mastering it requires a bit of strategy to ensure you hatch the specific results you’re looking for. Additionally, certain rare subspecies can only be obtained through targeted cross-breeding.
To begin your journey into Pal husbandry, you’ll need a dedicated breeding farm, a steady supply of cake, and two compatible Pals. Below, we break down the mechanics, how to unlock the facility, and the specific pairings required to produce rare variants.
Update (July 14): This guide has been fully updated to reflect the latest changes in Palworld version 1.0.
How Breeding Works in Palworld
Once you’ve constructed a breeding farm, assign one male and one female Pal to the enclosure. Crucially, you must place at least one piece of cake in the farm’s storage chest to initiate the process. For every cake provided, the pair will produce one egg. Unlike standard food, cake stored in the breeding farm’s chest will not spoil, allowing you to stockpile as much as you need.
Breeding is the most effective way to optimize your team, as offspring have the potential to inherit passive skills from their parents. For instance, if you breed two Pals with high-tier traits like “Work Slave,” there is a significant chance the offspring will inherit these benefits. It’s not a guarantee, but it is the primary method for creating powerhouse Pals. In some cases, hatchlings may even manifest entirely new traits, such as “Wellness Watcher,” regardless of the parents’ skill sets.

The system uses an internal formula to determine the outcome of a pairing; you cannot simply breed two weak starter Pals to instantly create a legendary end-game monster. Furthermore, you can occasionally hatch Alpha Pals—larger versions with superior base stats. While there is roughly a 5% chance of an Alpha outcome, it remains the most reliable way to obtain specific Alphas that aren’t world bosses.
Once the breeding timer concludes, you’ll receive an egg to place in an egg incubator. Keep an eye out for mutated eggs, which have the potential to hatch into Pals with randomized, enhanced stats and increased ranks.
Unlocking the Breeding Farm
The breeding farm becomes available at level 19 via the technology tree. To craft it, you will need 10 wooden boards, 20 stone, and 50 fiber. Because the structure has a large footprint, ensure you build it on a flat section of your base. If you plan on deep-diving into breeding, consider designating an entire base exclusively for your nursery and incubators.
How to Craft Cake
To produce cake, you first need a mill (unlocked at level 15) to grind your harvested wheat into flour. You will also need a cooking pot (unlocked at level 17), as cake cannot be prepared over a standard campfire.
The standard cake recipe requires 5 flour, 8 red berries, 7 milk, 8 eggs, and 2 honey. Beyond the base recipe, there are four advanced cake variants that provide unique breeding bonuses:
| Cake | Level | Ingredients | Effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mushroom cake | 30 | 5 flour, 5 mushrooms, 3 cavern mushrooms, 8 eggs, 2 honey | Talent growth is slightly accelerated. |
| Vegetable cake | 47 | 8 flour, 8 tomatoes, 7 lettuce, 8 eggs, 4 honey | Increases egg production frequency. |
| Extravagant vegetable cake | 60 | 12 flour, 8 cotton candy, 10 potatoes, 6 onions, 8 carrots | Boosts mutation probability and talent growth. |
| Special cake | 74 | 20 flour, 8 caramel cotton candy, 15 milk, 15 eggs, 2 Mammorest meat | High chance to inherit multiple passive skills. |
Breeding Combinations and Subspecies
With thousands of permutations, it’s impossible to list every single combination. For complex calculations, we suggest using the Palworld Database Wiki breeding calculator. However, for those looking for specific subspecies—many of which can be found in the wild—the table below outlines the guaranteed unique breeding paths.
