House of the Dragon Fails to Make HBO Top 10 Streaming List

HBO has established itself as a home for major television hits. Following shows like Sex and the City and The Sopranos, the network continues to deliver acclaimed programming. Franchise work like the DC universe series Lanterns and the award-winning series The Penguin has benefited both fans and the network. However, one of its biggest shows is slowly losing its grip on the number one spot on the streaming platform.

When Game of Thrones premiered in 2011, it dominated online and offline conversations. Fans discussed weekly episodes constantly, even keeping the chatter alive between seasons. With an influx of content available to viewers, the era of a Game of Thrones series completely overtaking pop culture has shifted. The dip in interest in House of the Dragon illustrates this change. While successful, its rapid drop from the top of the streaming charts raises questions for the franchise.

House of the Dragon premiered its third season in June and aired weekly. By September, FlixPatrol data showed the show had fallen out of the platform’s top 10 streaming charts. The series Lanterns currently holds the number one spot. House of the Dragon finished airing on August 9, meaning it dropped off the chart within a single month. Viewers either binged the season quickly, watched episodes as they aired without revisiting them, or skipped the season entirely.

Is There Just Too Much to Watch? Including in Westeros?

Even within Westeros, viewers face multiple shows within a single year. Early 2026 brought fans A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms alongside a brand new game. Even devoted fans of the Game of Thrones franchise have a substantial backlog, which can discourage repeat viewings of a season. The short shelf life of House of the Dragon may simply reflect an overcrowded television landscape. With streaming platforms releasing new shows daily, the Thrones era faces unprecedented competition, though more stories from Westeros remain on the horizon.
