Horror Game Mouthwashing Getting Film Adaptation

Add Mouthwashing to the growing list of games receiving a television or film adaptation. Sony acquired the film rights to the 2024 indie psychological horror game developed by Wrong Organ and published by Critical Reflex. The news follows the success of Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil adaptation, which Sony distributed and co-produced.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sony is developing the film with Crooked Highway, the production company behind The Black Phone. Karyn Kusama (Jennifer’s Body, Yellowjackets) will direct the project from a script by Matt Manfredi and Phil Hay. Manfredi and Hay also co-wrote the script for Kusama’s 2015 psychological horror film The Invitation.

Kusama has prior experience with video game adaptations. She serves as an executive producer on Amazon’s upcoming Life Is Strange series and is directing the first two episodes. That series recently wrapped shooting and earned praise from the original game’s creators.

What is Mouthwashing about?

Released in 2024, Mouthwashing follows five crew members of the cargo spaceship Tulpar. The crew is stranded in deep space with no hope of rescue after an accident apparently caused by their unstable captain. Mouthwashing features some jump scares, but the game focuses primarily on the dread of confinement among people descending into madness.

The game lasts about two and a half hours, which should help the filmmakers adapt the narrative closely. Players can experience Mouthwashing on all major platforms while waiting for the movie.
