While her hit “What Dreams Are Made Of” has long been a fixture of graduation playlists, Hilary Duff recently stepped into a new role: keynote commencement speaker.

On Wednesday, April 29, Duff took the stage at Fenway Park to inspire the Northeastern University class of 2026. Sharing insights from her unique path in the public eye, she began with a lighthearted admission of envy, noting that her own formal education was effectively paused in the third grade as she launched her career as a child star.

Reflecting on the pressures of the entertainment industry, she offered candid advice: “Just because an opportunity or a paycheck is enticing, doesn’t mean it aligns with your path. By mindlessly accepting what the world presented to me, I began to lose my own voice. I was merely reacting, rather than discerning what truly mattered to me. That realization was a profound paradigm shift.”

“I recognized the need to break the cycle of reflexive agreement, so I stepped away from music,” she shared. “I knew exactly what I wanted to express, but I also understood that I wasn’t in a place to deliver it with genuine authenticity yet.”

Following the success of her 2007 album Dignity, Duff pivoted to acting, production, and authorship, including her New York Times bestselling Elixir series. She eventually returned to music in 2015 with Breathe In. Breathe Out., which produced the Hot 100 hit “Sparks.”

“I made a conscious choice to step back and pivot. I focused on rebuilding, replenishing my energy, and investing in my family and business,” she explained. “I waited until I was fully ready to meet the moment. I discovered that saying ‘no’ wasn’t about rejection—it was about redirection. I reclaimed my agency and my narrative. I’m truly grateful for that pause… the lesson is that I learned to direct my energy intentionally rather than allowing others to dictate it. Take a moment to celebrate how far you’ve come.”

The warm reception from the audience marked another milestone in a successful year for Duff. Following the launch of her “Small Rooms, Big Nevers” tour, her latest album, Luck… Or Something—co-created with her husband, Matthew Koma—peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard 200, with “Roommates” climbing the Pop Airplay charts.

Fans can look forward to her upcoming “Lucky Me” tour, which commences in late June in West Palm Beach, Florida, before heading to major global markets, including New York, London, and Mexico City.
