Hilary Duff Reflects on Crashing Lindsay Lohan’s ‘Freaky Friday’ Premiere During Their Infamous Feud

For more than two decades, pop culture enthusiasts have speculated about the night Hilary Duff unexpectedly graced the red carpet at Lindsay Lohan’s 2003 Freaky Friday premiere. Now, the actress and singer is finally shedding light on that iconic moment of early-2000s tension.
During a candid sit-down on the latest episode of the Call Her Daddy podcast, Duff admitted to host Alex Cooper that her appearance at the event was a deliberate attempt to provoke a reaction from Lohan. “I was a teenager!” Duff recalled with a laugh, confirming she was “absolutely” trying to get a rise out of her peer.
According to Duff, the bold move wasn’t entirely her own idea. She revealed that her A Cinderella Story co-star, Chad Michael Murray, played a pivotal role in the scheme. “He was like, ‘You should come with me,’ and I was like, ‘Mm-hmm. Probably I should,’” she explained. Duff estimated she was only 15 or 16 at the time of the star-studded “premiere-crashing.”
The rivalry between Duff and Lohan remains one of the most documented celebrity feuds of the era, largely fueled by their overlapping romantic history with the late Aaron Carter. The “provocation” at the Freaky Friday screening didn’t go unanswered; Lohan famously retaliated just months later by appearing at the premiere of Duff’s film, Cheaper by the Dozen.
Reflecting on their history as “childhood nemeses,” Duff—who recently released her new album Luck … or Something—noted that the animosity is a thing of the distant past. She shared a refreshing update on their current dynamic, recalling a chance encounter at a nightclub years later.
“Lindsay came up to me at a club once and was like, ‘Are we good?’” Duff told Cooper. “And I was like, ‘We’re good.’ She was like, ‘Let’s take a shot.’ I was like, ‘OK!’”
