Hilary Duff’s latest musical endeavor, Luck … or Something, serves as a vulnerable exploration of her personal history. The album delves into the complexities of modern motherhood, the fallout of familial estrangement, and a reflective look at a past relationship characterized by a significant—and what she now deems “inappropriate”—age difference.

In a candid feature for Glamour released on Tuesday, February 17, the multitalented artist revealed her motivation for such transparency. Duff expressed a profound readiness to reconnect with her audience through the lens of her current reality, noting that many of her fans have likely weathered similar emotional storms over the last decade.

The tracklist features poignant entries like “We Don’t Talk,” which fans speculate addresses her rumored distance from her sister, Haylie. Another song, “The Optimist,” touches on her yearning for a deeper bond with her father. Duff acknowledged that those we are born into often occupy the most mental and emotional space, observing that biological connection does not always guarantee a lasting bond.

“You can only control your side and your street,” Duff remarked regarding her complicated upbringing. Her parents’ private struggles became public fodder years ago when her father, Robert, admitted to an affair during his marriage to her mother, Susan—a period marked by a contentious 2008 divorce and legal disputes over family assets.

While Duff avoided direct comments on the alleged “toxic mom group” drama involving Ashley Tisdale and her sister Haylie, she spoke warmly about the village she has built while raising her four children: Luca, Banks, Mae, and Townes. She noted that the friendships she has forged through parenthood have provided a surprising and deep sense of alignment in her adult life.

Luck … or Something is scheduled for release this Friday, February 20, followed by an extensive arena tour. Fans have already received a preview of the project’s introspective tone through the tracks “Roommates” and the lead single “Mature.”

Regarding the latter, Duff admitted the song recounts a brief romance with a much older man from her youth. Looking back with the perspective of age, she described the dynamic as questionable. She attributed her history of dating older individuals to her unique childhood, noting that having worked professionally since the age of 10 made it difficult to find common ground with peers her own age.
