Hidetaka Miyazaki Doubts FromSoftware Created the Soulslike Genre

Hidetaka Miyazaki, the acclaimed director of the Dark Souls series and Elden Ring, has expressed reservations about whether FromSoftware should be credited with the origin of the term “Soulslike.”

“I am aware that the invention of the term is often attributed to us, but from a design perspective, the concept of death and learning through failure as a fundamental gameplay loop was likely something the audience was already prepared to experience.”

“We found that developing games where death is central to the experience was well-received by a diverse range of players. It appears that FromSoftware’s distinct identity and design approach aligned perfectly with a niche that was previously underserved in the market.”

While the “Soulslike” label is unlikely to vanish from the gaming lexicon, Miyazaki’s humble perspective is quite striking. Although other developers might have experimented with punishing difficulty levels, few have managed to execute the formula with the same level of mastery and artistry as FromSoftware.
