Hideo Kojima says he never knew Konami had been offered a Matrix game — “No one told me about this in all 26 years”
Surprisingly, it appears that no one at Konami informed Kojima that the Wachowskis had proposed making a Matrix game with him.
According to Time Extension and an interview with former Konami executive Christopher Bergstresser, the Wachowskis reportedly approached Kojima about developing a video game based on The Matrix. Konami turned the idea down with a simple “no,” and the project never moved forward. While the notion of a Matrix game from the creator of Metal Gear Solid stunned fans, Kojima himself responded to the reports.
“In all 26 years, nobody ever told me that such a conversation had taken place,” he wrote on X. Although Kojima and the Wachowskis admired each other’s work, exchanged letters, and met on three occasions, he says he never received a direct offer.
The developer clarified that he was not present during the meeting between the Wachowskis and Konami’s CS division where the project was supposedly discussed.
“When I arrived at headquarters, their meeting with Mr. Kitaue, head of the CS division, had already concluded. I joined them afterward and we talked for about an hour without an interpreter (Aki wasn’t even there).”
Yet no one informed him about any offer.
While it’s doubtful Kojima could have accepted at the time — he was busy with Metal Gear Solid 2 — he added:
“Had someone told me, perhaps we could have made it happen.”
