Hearts of Iron IV Developer Diary: Romania at the Crossroads
Welcome, commanders! We are Alex, Norrman, and Marijn211—community modders teaming up with Paradox Interactive to bring you an exclusive first look at the forthcoming overhaul for Romania! Because these designs are actively in development and subject to refinement, we are eager to hear your impressions and integrate your feedback early in the process.
A couple of weeks ago, we revealed the International Cooperation system, which serves as a foundational mechanic connecting Romania’s diverse political paths. Everything remains subject to iteration, and we have taken your suggestions to heart—particularly regarding the need to make diplomatic upkeep feel genuinely rewarding rather than a tedious chore.
Most history enthusiasts know of Romania’s dramatic shift in 1944, when a royal coup toppled the authoritarian regime and brought the nation into the Allied fold. In 1936, however, the geopolitical reality was vastly different: Romania begins the campaign closely aligned with traditional partners like France and Poland.

As you progress through national focuses, your international alignment will evolve—occasionally permitting delicate balancing acts between rival superpowers. These paths unlock targeted decisions designed to maximize the strategic benefits of your foreign partnerships.

Key Focus Tree Highlights
Here is a preview of several critical focus branches currently in development:

In 1936, Romania’s domestic arms manufacturing was virtually non-existent despite significant growth potential. The reworked military tree provides multiple avenues to kickstart and expand your defense sector.

Will you lean into your existing strategic advantages, or pivot entirely toward rapid industrial modernization?

Experience a distinctly Romanian interpretation of royalist rule under King Carol II.

Which faction of ultranationalists will seize ultimate control over the destiny of the state?

Communist agitators can opt for a methodical campaign of grassroots subversion, or trigger a volatile, three-way civil war (custom icons pending final design).
That concludes our initial preview! Stay tuned for more comprehensive breakdowns of these systems in future dev diaries.
