HBO’s “Harry Potter” Will Go Beyond the Original Books — Lucius Malfoy Actor Talks About His Work on the Project

In HBO’s Harry Potter series, Lucius Malfoy will appear considerably earlier than in the books.

Johnny Flynn, known for his performances in One Life and Emma, has shared new details about his role in HBO’s Harry Potter adaptation. At the BFI London Film Festival premiere of & Sons, the actor confirmed he has already shot scenes as Lucius Malfoy for the first season and spoke about his reaction to the project.

“It’s wonderful. I only filmed a small amount, but I’m genuinely excited by these stories — the books, really. I still remember reading them as a teenager; they meant a great deal to me and to my children, so it’s a real pleasure to be involved.”

Having Lucius Malfoy appear in the first season departs from J.K. Rowling’s original novels, where the character doesn’t show up until the second book — Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. At the same time, the first season is set to adapt The Philosopher’s Stone.

The show’s creators previously said their ambitious, decade-spanning project would adhere to the books without the abridgements seen in the films. Lucius Malfoy’s earlier presence on screen indicates the series will expand beyond strict canon to give characters and the wider world additional context.

Filming is taking place in the United Kingdom, and the series is scheduled to premiere in 2027.
