Marcello Hernandez learned the hard way that there is no substitute for the real Harry Styles. In a fresh teaser for Saturday Night Live released this Wednesday, the comedian found himself in an awkward spot after getting a bit too immersive with his impersonation of the pop icon ahead of Styles’ upcoming double-duty stint as host and musical guest.
The promo kicks off as a stylistic homage to Styles’ One Night in Manchester concert special. As the delicate piano notes of his newest single, “American Girls,” drift through the air, a silhouetted figure is seen striking poses and gliding across the stage in signature fashion. The cinematic moment comes to a grinding halt when the actual Harry Styles strolls in alongside veteran cast member Kenan Thompson, catching Hernandez red-handed in full costume.
“What are you doing, Marcello? Are those my clothes?” Styles inquires, looking perplexed by the comedian’s choice of attire.
A visibly flustered Hernandez tries to play it cool despite being caught in Styles’ pinstriped, wide-leg trousers. “Yeah, sorry,” he stammers. “I thought you weren’t coming, so I figured I’d just step in as your understudy.”
Styles is quick to clarify the reason for his slight tardiness. “I’m 15 minutes late because Kenan and I went out for pain au chocolat,” he explains. “It’s a tradition whenever I host.”
Rest assured, the genuine article will be taking the reigns at Studio 8H this Saturday, March 14. This appearance marks Styles’ second time at the helm of SNL, following his well-received hosting debut in 2019.
The British superstar is also slated as the night’s musical guest, hot on the heels of his latest album release, Kiss All the Time. Disco, Occasionally. With the project already yielding the Billboard Hot 100 hit “Aperture” and the follow-up track “American Girls,” fans are eagerly anticipating which songs will make the cut for his live performances at 30 Rock.
