Guinness World Records Trolls GTA 6 Over Its Prolonged Development

The news of GTA 6’s delay has sparked a wave of reactions — ranging from criticism to playful jabs. Guinness World Records also joined the conversation, posting on the day the delay was announced about the longest development cycle in video game history.

Some interpreted the post as a hint toward GTA 6, but the record actually pertains to a different title. At present, Duke Nukem Forever holds the record with 14 years and 43 days. Guinness clarified that the measure counts active development time — from the moment work began until completion — rather than the gap between releases.

Although more than 12 years have passed since the previous instalment, Rockstar Games maintains that full-scale development on GTA 6 only started in 2020, when most of the team shifted to the project. Preparatory work likely began earlier, around 2018–2019. Even if the game releases in 2026, total development time would be roughly eight years, far from the record mark.

Still, Guinness’s gag hit its mark — fans insist the wait already feels like a world record. After leaks, a long pause between trailers, and yet another postponement, players are left with nothing to do but wait.
