Square Enix Hints at Drakengard Return, Prompting Remake Speculation From Fans

Square Enix has published a new, noticeably higher-quality image of Caim from Drakengard, prompting fans to discuss a potential remaster or full remake of the game.

Released in 2003 on the PlayStation 2, Drakengard was the first installment in Cavia’s series. Directed by Yoko Taro, the game gained recognition for its dark story, violent events, and unusual structure featuring multiple endings, one of which served as the foundation for the subsequent NieR series.

Square Enix brought up the game as part of a special post for “Square Enix Remembrance Day,” using an HD-quality image of Caim. Fans immediately started discussing a possible return for the franchise and asking why the company suddenly showed the protagonist in new quality.

Yoko Taro also noticed the post, leaving a cryptic comment saying “once upon a time.” There is no other official information about a Drakengard remake or remaster yet.
