While Netflix is historically hesitant to offer physical releases for its library, the platform has made noteworthy exceptions for del Toro. His Pinocchio received the Criterion treatment in 2023, following similar prestige releases for acclaimed works like The Irishman, Roma, Okja, and The Power of the Dog.

This adaptation offers a faithful, evocative take on Mary Shelley’s 1818 classic. Starring Oscar Isaac as the tormented Victor Frankenstein and Jacob Elordi as his tragic creation, the film debuted on Netflix following a brief theatrical engagement. It has garnered significant praise, holding an 84% score on Rotten Tomatoes. In our own review, we highlighted Elordi’s performance as the standout element of the production.

Frankenstein joins a stacked lineup of spooky arrivals from Criterion’s October catalog, which also features highly anticipated releases such as The Silence of the Lambs and The Shout.
