A week ago, the Sega Dreamcast console turned 25 years old—it was first released in North America on 09/09/1999. This milestone has brought even more attention to the project of porting GTA 3 to the console. And rightfully so. Compared to what we saw in July, the progress is obvious: textures load noticeably better, and the game runs at nearly 30 frames per second. But the build hasn’t just improved visually—the audio now works, including voices in cutscenes and radio stations in vehicles. Impressive results for just two months!
This development was even acknowledged by Obbe Vermeij, the technical director at Rockstar North during the creation of the first four Grand Theft Auto games, who praised the team of enthusiasts.
The community is concerned that representatives from Take-Two might take notice of the project, potentially causing this build to share the same fate as re3. Additionally, they dream of porting GTA: Vice City to the Sega Dreamcast next, as it is essentially the same game.
Meanwhile, more and more players are downloading regta3dc on gitlab.com, which has already led to the installation of the first mod on the platform. Instead of Claude, the protagonist has been replaced with Sonic the Hedgehog, the hero from Sega’s iconic franchise.
