Modding for the Grand Theft Auto series often focuses on aesthetic overhauls or gameplay expansions. Occasionally, however, a developer creates something so bizarre and technically impressive that it defies expectations. That is precisely what modder Dryxio achieved recently by successfully porting the entirety of GTA 3 and GTA: Vice City into the engine of GTA: San Andreas.

Beyond being a mere technical novelty, both titles are entirely functional. Players can navigate the open world, complete full mission arcs, and manage their save files just as they would in the standalone versions.

Taking this experiment to its logical—and surreal—extreme, Dryxio implemented a nested “inception” mechanic. Within the environment of San Andreas, players can trigger GTA III, and from inside that game, launch GTA: Vice City, effectively running a digital Russian nesting doll of classic Rockstar titles.

This remarkable feat of reverse engineering was made possible through the groundwork laid by the open-source re3 and reVC projects.
