Gregg Araki to direct dark comedy starring Ashton Kutcher
Gregg Araki has officially commenced production on his latest dark comedy, The Decline of F*cking Western Civilization, headlined by Ashton Kutcher and Alison Brie. Negotiations are currently underway to bring Jesse Williams into the ensemble cast, with filming having kicked off in Los Angeles on September 16.
While specific plot details remain under wraps, the project is being framed as an ensemble piece reminiscent of the tone found in Election and American Beauty, promising a volatile mix of dark humor, dramatic tension, and complex interpersonal dynamics. The screenplay was penned by Kevin W. Koehler, with additional revisions provided by Araki himself. Production is being spearheaded by Why Not Productions and Goodfellas.
This film serves as the follow-up to Araki’s previous feature, the erotic thriller I Want Your Sex, starring Olivia Wilde and Cooper Hoffman. A prominent figure in American independent cinema, the director is widely celebrated for his provocative filmography, including cult classics such as Mysterious Skin, The Doom Generation, and Nowhere.
