God of War Spinoff Starring Faye Reportedly in Development
Sony Santa Monica is reportedly developing an unanticipated God of War spin-off that shifts the spotlight away from Kratos. Faye—the legendary Frost Giant, wife of Kratos, and mother to Atreus—is rumored to be the protagonist of her own dedicated title. Portrayed by Deborah Ann Woll (Daredevil, True Blood), the character’s solo venture is whispered to be eyeing a formal reveal later this year with a projected 2027 release date.
The speculation gained momentum after noted industry insider NateTheHate suggested on X that the studio’s next project remains tethered to the God of War mythos. This new entry will reportedly feature Faye as the primary lead and pivot toward a more action-intensive gameplay style compared to recent installments. These claims were subsequently corroborated by reports from IGN.
Earlier reports from Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier indicated that Sony Santa Monica was working on a project that was “not a new IP.” Further evidence, including a senior writer’s LinkedIn profile discovered via ResetEra, reinforces the notion that the studio isn’t finished with the Nine Realms just yet.
Positioning Faye as a playable protagonist is a significant narrative shift. In the 2018 God of War, her physical presence is defined by her absence; the story begins with her cremation, leaving Kratos and Atreus to navigate their grief. Initially presented as a mortal, the game’s climax revealed her true identity as Laufey the Just, a Frost Giant who possessed the gift of prophecy and orchestrated the journey her family would eventually undertake.
Her character was further fleshed out in God of War Ragnarök through poignant dream sequences, which showcased her deep emotional connection with Kratos and her fierce dedication to her people.
Because Faye’s death is a cornerstone of the modern series, this new project is widely expected to be a prequel. This has sparked a mixed reaction among the fanbase, with some questioning the stakes of a story with a known conclusion. However, many others are eager to experience her unique combat mechanics, wondering how her Giant magic and mastery of the Leviathan Axe will differ from Kratos’ brutal efficiency.
While the evidence continues to mount, Sony has yet to provide an official confirmation regarding this Faye-centric expansion.
