Amazon Prime’s highly anticipated live-action God of War adaptation is officially moving through pre-production, and the search for its leading man has concluded. In a fascinating turn of events, the actor chosen to embody the Ghost of Sparta is already deeply embedded in the franchise’s lore, having previously portrayed the God of Thunder in the video game series.
According to a report by Deadline, Ryan Hurst has been cast in the iconic role of Kratos. Hurst is widely recognized for his standout performance as Opie Winston in the FX drama Sons of Anarchy and recently appeared in Netflix’s The Abandons. His connection to the Santa Monica Studio titles is profound; he provided the voice and performance capture for Thor in 2022’s God of War Ragnarök, a role that earned him a BAFTA nomination. While Christopher Judge defined Kratos in the games, Hurst will now take up the mantle for the television screen.
The upcoming series will focus on the franchise’s Norse era, drawing narrative inspiration from both the 2018 God of War and its sequel, Ragnarök. The plot follows the somber journey of Kratos and his young son, Atreus, as they venture across the realms to fulfill a final promise: scattering the ashes of their late wife and mother, Faye. While Hurst is the first major casting announcement, the roles of Atreus and other key deities remain unannounced.
Amazon has already committed to a two-season order for the production. The project is being steered by showrunner and executive producer Ronald D. Moore, known for his work on Outlander and the reimagined Battlestar Galactica. The series is a massive collaborative effort between Sony Pictures Television, Amazon MGM Studios, PlayStation Productions, and Tall Boy Productions. Principal photography is scheduled to commence this March in Vancouver.
