Ghost of Yotei Sells 3.3 Million Copies; PS5 Surpasses 84 Million Units — Sony Reports Financial Results

Sony released its financial results for the second quarter of fiscal 2025, highlighting steady growth in the Game & Network Services division and new milestones for the PS5 and first‑party titles. The company confirmed that Ghost of Yotei has sold 3.3 million copies, and that cumulative PS5 shipments have surpassed 84.2 million units.

Gaming and network services revenue for July–September reached ¥1,113.2 billion (~$7.42 billion), an increase of 3.9% from ¥1,071.5 billion in the same period last year. Operating income fell 13.3% to ¥120.4 billion (~$0.80 billion), weighed down by one‑time write‑downs tied to Bungie and Destiny 2, including a ¥31.5 billion (~$0.21 billion) impairment of Bungie’s intangible assets and a ¥18.3 billion (~$0.12 billion) adjustment to capital expenditures.

Hardware sales remained steady, with 3.9 million PS5 units shipped and ¥230.9 billion (~$1.54 billion) in hardware revenue. Software sales climbed to 80.3 million copies, of which 6.3 million were first‑party titles. Digital sales totaled ¥268.3 billion (~$1.79 billion), physical sales were ¥35.4 billion (~$0.24 billion), and downloadable content and add‑ons generated ¥299.8 billion (~$2.00 billion).

The PlayStation Plus network segment grew 13.6% to ¥182.7 billion (~$1.22 billion), with 119 million active users reported. Ghost of Yotei emerged as a major hit—3.3 million copies sold in 32 days. ASTRO BOT reached 1.5 million units, Helldivers 2 hit 12 million, while Marvel’s Spider‑Man 2 and God of War Ragnarök achieved 10 million and 15 million copies, respectively.

Sony attributes the revenue gain to strong performance in digital content and subscription services, though it notes a need to improve profitability following the Bungie‑related write‑downs. With consistent PS5 shipments and holiday releases on the horizon, Sony expects to meet its full‑year targets of ¥4,470 trillion (~$29.8 billion) in sales and ¥500 billion (~$3.33 billion) in operating income by March 2026.
