Funcom Lays Off Employees Again Despite Dune: Awakening’s Success
Funcom has announced another restructuring following the departure of CEO Rui Casais. The restructuring will lead to more layoffs, even though Dune: Awakening has sold well.
The studio will continue to support Dune: Awakening and Conan Exiles, but changes in the games market are forcing it to cut costs. According to the company, Dune: Awakening was too expensive to make. It is Funcom’s biggest project, and it required significant resources and put heavy pressure on the budget.
The restructuring has already begun. The company has not disclosed how many employees will lose their jobs.
Dune: Awakening sold 1 million copies in two weeks, but player interest has declined over time. Player reviews remain mixed, partly because of the PvP. Adding a single-player mode and several PvE options does not appear to have fixed the problem.
Funcom also made layoffs last October without disclosing their scale. Scott Junior will replace Rui Casais as head of the company. He was previously chief product officer and executive producer of Dune: Awakening.
