Larry Hryb, better known as Major Nelson, reappeared two years after leaving Xbox to mark the 20th anniversary of the Xbox 360. In a recent post he revealed a unique console he received as a gift at the system’s launch.
This month marks twenty years since the dawn of the HD era and the launch of the Xbox 360. Being part of the build, shipping, and rollout of that console was one of the most magical chapters of my career. For the first time, I’m sharing photos of the unit each team member received as a thank-you gift. Fun fact: I have NEVER powered it on.
Commenters advised against turning the device on, joking that it might meet the “Red Ring of Death” in 2025. Others pointed out the console could be especially rare — it appears to include the original Blades dashboard, which has long been removed from firmware.
When asked which game he’d launch first, Hryb chose Hexic — the classic puzzle title that was bundled with the Xbox 360 at its 2005 debut — rather than Halo 3.
