Former PlayStation Head Doesn’t Understand Gamer Backlash Over Sony Dropping Discs
Former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida admitted he was unaware of reported plans by Sony to completely phase out physical game releases by 2028. He has shifted almost entirely to digital formats himself and does not consider the absence of discs a major issue for most players.
In a new interview, Yoshida noted that he prefers digital games because he dislikes storing physical cases and swapping discs in his console.
I am a totally digital consumer. I do not want to manage discs or swap them. I want all my games on the dashboard so that I just select the game and play it.
At the same time, Yoshida understands why physical editions remain popular. He believes demand for them will continue even if disc manufacturing declines, though he does not see their eventual disappearance as a significant drawback. He explained that modern physical releases frequently require extra downloads regardless.
Even in the case of games on physical discs, developers constantly update and add to game data. Therefore, a buyer of a physical version still has to download new patches, add-ons, or updates. So I do not understand why the absence of a disc is such a big problem.
