The long-awaited release of Grand Theft Auto 6 approaches, bringing players back to Vice City, the Miami-inspired setting of the franchise. Another crime-ridden version of Miami is also on the way. Universal Pictures revealed the first look at its upcoming Miami Vice reboot on Monday, offering a preview of Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler in the period crime drama.

Titled Miami Vice ’85, the project was first revealed last April. Top Gun: Maverick and F1 director Joseph Kosinski is directing the film from a script by Dan Gilroy, who wrote Nightcrawler and Kong: Skull Island. Jordan and Butler star as undercover detectives Tubbs and Crockett.

Production on Miami Vice ’85 is underway, according to the social media reveal. The film releases on May 19, 2028. Jordan and Butler appear alongside a supporting cast featuring Alden Ehrenreich, Whitney Peak, Camila Morrone, Danny Ramirez, John Leguizamo, Andrew Schulz, Edi Gathegi, Walton Goggins, André Holland, and Michael Irby.

What is Miami Vice?

Miami Vice originated as a television series that ran on NBC from 1984 to 1989. Anthony Yerkovich created the show, and Michael Mann served as executive producer. Philip Michael Thomas and Don Johnson played Tubbs and Crockett in the original run. The series served as a heavy inspiration for Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.

Mann revisited Miami Vice in 2006 with a modernized film reboot starring Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell as Tubbs and Crockett. Joseph Kosinski takes a different approach by returning the franchise to its roots in 1980s Miami, featuring period suits and neon lighting.
