After dedicating over a decade to the Final Fantasy VII remake trilogy, Naoki Hamaguchi admits he is not ready to spearhead another project of such staggering magnitude.
Naoki Hamaguchi, the director behind the Final Fantasy VII Remake project, has clarified that he does not intend to oversee a potential reimagining of the series’ sixth entry. Having spent more than ten years bringing the FF7 saga to life, he expressed a reluctance to dive back into such an exhaustive reconstruction of a classic title.
During a conversation with GamerBraves, Hamaguchi noted that over ten years have already passed since the initial announcement of FF7 Remake in 2015. By the time the trilogy’s concluding chapter is released—tentatively scheduled for 2027—the endeavor will have occupied nearly twelve years of his professional career.
While the director remains fond of the idea of modernizing Final Fantasy VI, he believes the responsibility should fall to others. “I would rather offer my support and cheer them on from the sidelines than immerse myself in the development of a remake once again,” Hamaguchi remarked.
Speculation regarding a potential FF6 Remake has persisted for years. Many enthusiasts regard the sixth installment as one of the franchise’s crowning achievements and have long petitioned Square Enix for a modern overhaul similar to FF7. However, the company has yet to confirm any official plans, and Hamaguchi’s comments reinforce the notion that if such a project ever materializes, it will likely be guided by a different creative team.
