Final Fantasy 14 Players Respond Perfectly to the 2026 PHP Vulnerability

Earlier this week, a severe PHP security vulnerability knocked a host of major websites and online services offline, and Final Fantasy 14 was among them. For gardeners in Eorzea, that was a real worry. Square Enix’s MMO runs several systems on real-world timers that keep ticking whether or not a player is logged in. Anyone shut out during the PHP outage feared their gardens would wilt and perish while they were away. Fortunately, the community came to the rescue.

The game was not taken down everywhere around the world, so some adventurers could still roam Eorzea, and a few of them chose to lend a hand. One player started a Reddit thread, first noticed by PC Gamer, titled “PHP Watering Service.” It did precisely what the name promised. The poster asked locked-out players to reply or send a DM with the address of their in-game home, and offered to water their plants free of charge.

Others had the same idea, and more watering offers appeared on X. This works because of a handy quirk in the game: watering carries no special restrictions, so any player can tend any plant, including those in someone else’s home. The result was an impromptu, internet-wide mutual aid network that kept everyone’s greenery healthy. It is yet another example of the Warriors of Light helping one another in unexpected ways, and it goes a long way toward explaining the Final Fantasy 14 community’s sterling reputation.

Is Final Fantasy 14 still dealing with PHP issues?

After roughly 24 hours of round-the-clock effort to resolve the PHP problem, Square Enix has begun allowing new logins. Players can now return to Eorzea and look after their own plants again. Since the vulnerability disrupted the game for only about a day, no one’s garden should have withered.

There is one catch to the game’s return. Square Enix briefly suspended housing auto-demolition, the mechanism that reclaims abandoned plots when an owner fails to visit their property within a set period. The system exists because Final Fantasy 14 housing is not instanced, so each server has only a limited number of plots. With the PHP troubles behind it, auto-demolition will resume on Oct. 26.
