Fast & Furious Director Takes on Helldivers

Paul Verhoeven’s 1997 film adaptation of Robert A. Heinlein’s Starship Troopers skewered militaristic consumerism with satirical violence and propaganda-laden interludes. Arrowhead Game Studios’ third-person shooter Helldivers 2 echoed that same blend of bombast and biting humor through its cinematic set pieces and cooperative missions, where squads of soldiers descend onto hostile worlds to defend Super Earth from insectoid threats. Now that creative loop appears set to close: Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions are developing a feature film based on the game.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Justin Lin — known for several entries in the Fast & Furious franchise and Star Trek Beyond — is attached to direct. The screenplay is being written by Gary Dauberman, whose credits include the Annabelle entries and who previously collaborated with PlayStation Studios on the adaptation of Until Dawn. That combination points toward a film that will likely lean into high-energy sci-fi spectacle with horror-tinged moments.

No release date has been announced, and the project could remain in development for some time — Lin has also been connected to a live-action adaptation of One Punch Man since 2022. Sony first revealed that a Helldivers film was underway in January, alongside a tease of a separate Horizon Zero Dawn movie.

Since PlayStation Productions launched in 2019, its slate has expanded steadily. HBO’s adaptation of The Last of Us is moving toward a third season, Peacock’s Twisted Metal was recently renewed for a third season, and a new Resident Evil reboot directed by Zach Cregger — filmmaker of Weapons and Barbarian — is in production with a projected release date of September 18, 2026. Other efforts in development include an anime adaptation of Ghost of Tsushima and a God of War series for Prime Video.
