Fan-Made Remake of Canceled Resident Evil 0 for Nintendo 64 Released
An enthusiast had to search through old records and articles to rebuild the project.
Recently, an indie developer known as Jayjay-1992 recalled an unreleased project from Capcom’s famous horror franchise. They decided to create a remake of the demo for the canceled Nintendo 64 version of Resident Evil.
Jayjay-1992 explained that this playable demo was shown at the E3 2000 event and the spring 2000 Tokyo Game Show. In this early build, players took control of Rebecca Chambers as she explored the Ecliptic Express: “Chaos already reigns on the train. You will meet a dying member of the S.T.A.R.S. Bravo team and have your first encounter with Billy Coen while horror unfolds all around.”
The developer aimed to recreate the atmosphere, layout, and key moments of that Resident Evil 0 prototype as accurately as possible. To do this, they had to study archival materials:
Since no public ROM image of the N64 prototype exists, every background, fixed camera angle, enemy placement, and gameplay detail was painstakingly reconstructed through extensive research. I studied old magazine previews, archival screenshots, convention floor video footage, and preserved materials from long-gone websites. The goal was always preservation first—to bring back this lost piece of Resident Evil history as accurately as possible for fans who never got to play it.

Developer Jayjay-1992 is distributing the project titled “Resident evil 0 N64 – E3/TGS 2000 demo remake” through the itch.io service.
