Fallout 4 Is Officially Returning Ten Years After Its Launch
Bethesda has just handed players a handful of compelling reasons to return to Fallout 4, even if you’ve already sunk hundreds of hours into the wasteland and its many expansions. Three new releases take the series into uncharted territory.
Each of these experiences was built by modders working directly with Bethesda, so they’re a step above the usual fan projects. With the studio’s backing, they feel closer to official DLC than to community add-ons.
The most ambitious of the bunch may be Command Override, a compact campaign built around the robotics giant RobCo. Technology is the focus, so you’ll spend your time hacking and commandeering a variety of machines. As you push deeper into RobCo’s headquarters, you’ll find experimental equipment such as the Ghost Pilot Suit, which lets you see through walls. New weapons include a Beam Gun that overheats to deal bonus damage. There’s a catch, though: that extra firepower also exposes you to more radiation.
Because you can pilot robots directly, their weaponry becomes yours too. The official description promises that you can “Access everything from the Sentry Bot’s missile pod to the Assaultron’s eye laser.” The trailer above is full of action, and a live-action advertisement for the game is also available. Together they show how far these projects aim to go.
Fallout 4 veterans return
Next up is Fallout 4: FEVer Dreams, which brings back Courtenay Taylor and Brian T. Delaney, the original voice actors for Fallout 4‘s protagonists. You begin the story captive and unarmed, apparently infected with a live strain of the Forced Evolutionary Virus. Combat is part of the mix, but FEVer Dreams leans on an escape-room-style dungeon packed with puzzles. It’s rich in lore and promises new insight into Fallout’s infamous bioweapon. You’ll meet some familiar faces, though they come with fresh gear and weapons.
The official trailer paints FEVer Dreams as a trippy odyssey that toys with your perception. That suits a story where you’re stuck in a facility teeming with Deathclaws and mini-nukes. You choose one of the two protagonists, but the other spouse still speaks to you throughout. New characters arrive with difficult choices attached. In one scene, a ghoul explains that only one of them can take the last dose of what appears to be a cure for FEV, then asks, “How do you think we should handle this?”
The last announcement is a Fallout 4 experience due sometime in 2027. Called Fallout 4: Fathomless, it’s a cosmic horror adventure set around a mysterious crater on the ocean floor. The whole story unfolds underwater, and while exploring shipwrecks you’ll encounter brand-new Eldritch horrors. Like FEVer Dreams, it features voice acting. You can get a peek at this eerie addition in Bethesda’s official Fallout Day video below.
These releases could be the perfect distraction while you wait for Bethesda’s or Obsidian Entertainment’s upcoming Fallout projects to arrive. Bethesda still has the next Elder Scrolls to finish, never mind the next major Fallout game. All of the new mod creations are available to PlayStation 5, Xbox, and PC players through Bethesda’s Creation platform.
