Longtime fans will recognize this legacy from Black Ops 4.
The iconic Blackout mode, which pioneered the battle royale genre for the franchise in Black Ops 4, is making a grand return. Next week, Call of Duty: Warzone will debut “Black Ops Royale,” a fresh mode that developers are calling an experience deeply inspired by the series’ very first foray into massive-scale survival.
According to the official description, this is an “authentic battle royale experience in the spirit of Blackout, stripped of custom loadouts, the Gulag, and Buy Stations.” Players must drop into the Avalon map, scavenge for survival gear, upgrade their weaponry, master new mechanics, and strive to outlast 24 rival squads in a high-stakes environment.
The developers have been careful to clarify that this is not a direct remake of Blackout. Instead, it is described as a “unique experience that pays homage to the core pillars of Blackout while maintaining the fast-paced gameplay loop that Warzone players have come to expect.”
At launch, the mode will exclusively support Quads, featuring 25 teams per match. If eliminated, players can return to the action instantly if they hold a specific respawn token, or they can be brought back into the fight by teammates via redeploy beacons.
Black Ops Royale is scheduled to launch on March 13.
