Staying true to its origins as a League of Legends-inspired trading card game—where champions clash across a three-lane theater—Riftbound places immense strategic weight on battlefield cards. In a standard best-of-three, 1v1 duel, competitors bring a suite of three battlefields, selecting one at the outset of each game. Controlling these zones is the primary path to victory, as players accumulate points by seizing and defending them. Because every battlefield grants unique tactical bonuses, selecting the right one to complement your deck’s specific win condition is vital.
We are thrilled to exclusively unveil a new battlefield arriving in Riftbound: Vendetta on July 31. This card introduces a powerful, consistent draw engine tailored for players who prefer to keep their number of active runes relatively low.
The card, titled Protective Sands, allows a player to pay one energy to draw a card upon conquering it, provided they control four or fewer runes. The artwork serves as a compelling callback to Legends of Runeterra, specifically the “Ancient Preparations” landmark. It captures a haunting scene of a Clockling automaton interred by shifting desert sands, watched over by a vigilant Clockwork Curator. Within the game’s lore, these sentinels have guarded the tower of the time-mage Zilean for millennia, enduring the unforgiving Shuriman climate.

At first glance, Protective Sands might seem understated. However, it is a masterclass in design for aggressive decks that frequently cycle resources. Since players fuel their turns by recycling runes back into their deck, those who play aggressively rather than hoarding resources will find it trivial to maintain the “four or fewer” requirement. Effectively, this battlefield transforms a successful conquest into a cycle of card advantage, allowing players to replenish their hand for a mere single energy while maintaining their momentum.
Protective Sands highlights the burgeoning depth arriving with Vendetta. The expansion introduces three core mechanics: Flow, which enables casting from the discard pile; Burn, which mills cards to trigger synergies or assault an opponent’s deck; and Empower, which grants units fresh abilities upon entering the fray. Furthermore, the set introduces versatile Unit-Gear cards and a cycle of Decrees—spells explicitly designed to punish specific enemy domains.
Launching on July 31, Riftbound: Vendetta centers on iconic rivalries, exploring what the developers describe as the “clashes between former friends, immortal enemies, and members of the same family.” Protective Sands provides the perfect backdrop for these legendary duels to unfold.
