Don’t Expect a PS6 Anytime Soon — PS5 Is in Its Prime

Don’t expect PlayStation 6 yet — Sony says the current console generation is only midway through its lifecycle. The company promises several more years of active development and expanded capabilities for the PlayStation 5.

At its latest investor meeting, Sony’s chief financial officer Lin Tao stated that the PS5 is in the middle of its lifecycle. She compared it with earlier generations, stressing that each generation’s lifespan has been gradually extending.

The PS4 launched in 2013 and still enjoys a lively user base. From that perspective, the PS5 is only beginning its trajectory, and support for the console — including additional content and services — will continue for the foreseeable future.

Sony expects PlayStation 6 to arrive no earlier than 2027–2028, and plans to support the PS5 into the early years of the next decade. The approach makes economic sense: developers will be able to keep producing games for a vast PS5 audience before fully shifting to a new platform. In short, the PS5 is likely to remain the “queen of the living room” for quite some time.
