The Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred expansion is set to arrive on April 28, signaling the dramatic finale of the Age of Hatred saga. In this final chapter, players must forge an unlikely alliance with Lilith to thwart Mephisto’s encroaching darkness. The narrative unfolds within the Skovos Isles, a treacherous new territory defined by violent volcanic activity and unrelenting maritime storms. Beyond the debut of the shadow-weaving Warlock class—and the inclusion of the Paladin for those who pre-purchase—Blizzard is expanding the lore through a new prequel novel titled The Lost Horadrim.
Authored by Matthew J. Kirby, acclaimed for his work on the Assassin’s Creed series, the story centers on Lorath, a veteran of the ancient Horadric Order. Lorath travels to the Skovos archipelago to uncover the fate of a missing expedition that sought to unlock a forbidden vault. His survival depends on a tenuous partnership with Captain Adreona, an Amazon leader struggling to repel a relentless supernatural insurgency.

A heavy silence hung between Lorath and Adreona as the cutter ferried them from the docks into the churning open sea. Even as they drifted beneath the towering effigies of angel and demon, neither offered a word. They worked in practiced, rhythmic tandem to hoist the Arabel’s sails, exchanging only the curt instructions required to manage the rigging. Lorath harbored no ill will toward the Captain, despite the fact that she had recently seen him imprisoned and remained intent on his exile. He didn’t begrudge the islands their relative safety in a fractured world. Yet, he could feel her hostility simmering like a heat haze over a desert floor, a resentment he found increasingly difficult to justify.
With a following wind from the southeast, the Arabel surged across the whitecaps. Once the vessel found its stride, Lorath retreated toward the stern, standing near Keldon at the helm. Adreona occupied the opposite side of the captain. While Keldon seemed to lean into the quiet, Lorath’s patience had worn thin.
“Captain,” he began, breaking the stillness. “This partnership wasn’t our first choice, but I am a man of my word. I will fight for your people and—”

“I have no need for your sword,” she interrupted, her voice sharp and immediate. “Not for myself, and certainly not for Skovos. My only wish is for you to stay out of my way. I have no interest in acting as your jailer while we are in the field.”
Lorath swallowed his irritation. “I had no desire to set foot on Skovos. However, your Queen has mandated my service. I was a protector long before I reached these shores, and I intend to remain one. My skills could be an asset.”
“Unlikely,” she retorted. “I intend to station you where you can cause the least amount of disruption.”
“Do you make a habit of ignoring royal decrees?”
That struck a nerve. She turned to face him fully. “Queen Etara gave no specifics on how you should be utilized. There are many roles in our defense, and every one of them is vital to the security of these islands.”

“Why do I get the feeling I’ll be cleaning latrines?” Lorath muttered.
“Perhaps your time would be better spent with the mystics than bothering me,” she replied coldly.
“The sails are luffing,” Keldon noted calmly from between them.
Lorath moved instantly to adjust the mainsail while Adreona handled the jib. The chore reset the silence for a several minutes until Adreona spoke again, her tone slightly less abrasive.
“This isn’t a personal grievance,” she said. “How could it be? You are a stranger to me.”
“If you bothered to learn who I am, you’d see—”
“Listen to me. I am trying to provide perspective.”
Lorath went quiet and gave a short nod.

“You are outsiders,” she continued. “Our ways are foreign to you, even if you’ve had a brush with the horrors we fight—a brush that would have been your end if my scouts hadn’t intervened.”
“And for that, I am truly—”
“I wasn’t finished. You’ve seen the surface of the threat, but not the depth. The Amazon ranks were decimated during the Reaping. We were broken, and we have yet to rebuild our strength. Conversely, the Drowned grow more numerous by the day. My sisters are barely holding the line. If that line fails…” She trailed off, the weight of the possibility visibly pressing on her. “Our situation is precarious. We cannot tolerate a single point of failure or a rogue element, regardless of how well-intentioned. I do not know you, Lorath, and because of that, I cannot gamble the lives of my soldiers on your reliability.”

“I understand,” Lorath said softly.

“Do you truly?”
“I do. I was a soldier once. I know that a single weak link can sink an entire company.”
She studied him for a moment. “I’m relieved to hear that.”
“Assign me wherever I am most useful,” Lorath added, realizing that debate would yield nothing. “I can dig trenches as well as any man.”
“I’m sure you can,” she replied.
With a functional truce established, the atmospheric pressure between them lifted. Even Keldon seemed to relax his grip on the tiller. While Lorath wasn’t thrilled at the prospect of menial labor, he knew trust was earned through action. He only hoped he would have enough time in Skovos to prove his worth before the storm broke.
