It seems that even electronic music titans have a soft spot for four-legged friends. This June, producer deadmau5—known to his fans as Joel Zimmerman—officially expanded his household, adopting a new cat to join his existing clowder of Peanut, Dizzy, and Dolly.

Taking to Instagram to share the news, the artist introduced his latest companion: a charmingly grumpy three-year-old tabby. The feline, aptly named “Cathulhu,” was captured on video enjoying some well-deserved affection from his new owner at the animal shelter.

The journey to adoption began when the Humane Society of Oakville, Milton & Halton in Ontario faced a crisis after rescuing 27 cats in dire need of medical intervention. Demonstrating his long-standing commitment to animal welfare, deadmau5 stepped in immediately, covering the organization’s $30,000 emergency veterinary expenses.

Following his generous donation, the artist invited his Patreon supporters to help name the rescued group. Fans quickly gravitated toward the moniker “Cathulhu” for one particular tabby, noting how his uniquely curled, tentacle-like whiskers bore a striking resemblance to H.P. Lovecraft’s famous eldritch entity. Zimmerman confirmed the name shortly thereafter.

During his initial outreach to the shelter, the artist candidly admitted his weakness for animals in need, telling InsideHamilton, “I might take one—because I’m a sucker.”

Zimmerman’s dedication to rescue animals is well-documented. In previous discussions, he has emphasized the importance of choosing adoption over purchasing high-end “showpiece” breeds, highlighting the plight of stray cats and the deep, silent appreciation he feels rescues possess for being given a second chance at a loving home.
