DC made a towering announcement this Thursday at the Annecy Animation Festival: the critically acclaimed, best-selling comic series Absolute Batman is officially being adapted for the screen.

The “Absolute” imprint strips DC’s icons down to their raw foundations. For Bruce Wayne, this means abandoning his inherited fortune, his loyal butler, and a vault full of high-tech gadgetry—though he does trade those luxuries for a brutal Bat-axe. Far from a spoiled socialite, this version of Batman is a construction worker who possesses the tactical mind of an engineer and the imposing physicality of a pro-linebacker. This iteration breathes new life into the mythos, famously subverting traditional relationships by recasting some of Gotham’s deadliest villains as unexpected allies.

Spearheaded by writer Scott Snyder and artist Nick Dragotta, the series has become a juggernaut, selling upwards of 6 million copies across 21 issues. The book garnered a 2025 Eisner Award nomination for Best New Series, with letterer Clayton Cowles securing a win for his exceptional work. Snyder is slated to lead the animated project as showrunner and executive producer, with Dragotta also serving in a producer role.

According to the official series synopsis:

Absolute Batman courageously reimagines the Dark Knight for a contemporary audience, presenting a working-class hero forced to endure insurmountable odds. His mission serves as a defiant proof that, even in a landscape defined by greed and systemic corruption, a single individual can transform the world.

No manor. No bank account. No shortcuts. Just the raw, unvarnished essence of Batman.

While a premiere date has yet to be revealed, the project joins a robust slate of high-quality animated DC productions, including the celebrated third season of My Adventures with Superman and the upcoming second season of the noir-inspired Batman: Caped Crusader.

Years ago, when rumors swirled about a potential Netflix acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, many critics—including our team here at Polygon—pushed for a high-octane anime adaptation of the Absolute storyline. While those specific merger plans eventually crumbled and a new path forward was forged via the Paramount and Warner Bros. deal, DC fans can finally rest easy knowing this gritty, reimagined Caped Crusader is officially coming to screens.
