DC Boss Announces Cast for Mister Miracle Animated Series

James Gunn has made Tom King one of the architects of the new DC Universe. Several of the writer’s comic runs are now being adapted for the screen. A celebrated 2021 miniseries titled Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow was turned into a 2026 film that received far less praise. Up next is an animated series based on King’s 2017-2019 run of Mister Miracle. News about the show has been sparse since it was announced last year, but DC has now cast the show’s heroes.

In a wide-ranging interview with IGN, DC Studios co-head Peter Safran named the two actors who will serve as the show’s leads. Josh Hutcherson from The Hunger Games and plenty of internet memes will play the titular escape artist. Mackenzie Davis from Station Eleven and Happiest Season will play his wife, Big Barda. King recently served as co-creator of Lanterns and wrote all eight episodes of Mister Miracle himself. Safran called the script dynamite. He stated that it is a beautiful book and the adaptation is fantastic, so they are excited about it.

The official synopsis for the DC show is as follows:

No prison can hold him. No trap can contain him. He is Scott Free, the worldwide celebrity sensation known as Mister Miracle, and he is the greatest escape artist who ever lived. But can he pull off the ultimate trick – and escape death itself? Something has gone horribly wrong with the perfect life that Scott and his warrior wife Big Barda have built for themselves on Earth. With war raging between their home worlds of Apocalypse and New Genesis, Scott’s cruel adoptive father, Darkseid, seems to have finally captured the Anti-Life Equation – the ultimate weapon that will give Darkseid total dominance over the universe. As the mountains of bodies on both sides grow ever higher, only Mister Miracle can stop the slaughter and restore peace. But the terrible power of the Anti-Life Equation may already be at work in his own mind, warping his reality, exposing his long-buried pain, and shattering the fragile happiness he’s found with the woman he loves. And so, begins the odyssey of Scott Free, Mister Miracle: a harrowing, hilarious, heart-wrenching journey across the pitfalls of the ordinary and extraordinary as the son of God raised by the devil tries to save his family, his world, and maybe even himself.

Warner Bros. and DC are committed to The Batman Part 2

Safran gave a hopeful update on the status of Matt Reeves’ The Batman Part 2 following the sudden halt of production earlier this month. Reeves stepped away from the project for the moment due to a family matter, and there is currently no word on when production will resume. That left some worried that the long-delayed project may never actually see the light of day. When asked directly by IGN if there is a scenario in which filming does not resume, Safran succinctly shut down the possibility with the answer, “No.” That backs up what star Robert Pattinson recently said about the film. On the red carpet for his new film, Primetime, the actor assured fans that they are going to figure it all out.

Other minor updates Safran gave included the reveal that early development on the Absolute Batman animated series is underway with Scott Snyder in the process of writing scripts. Safran’s co-head of DC, James Gunn, has not chosen what his next directorial project will be, though Gunn has said he has already started writing something new.
