Dave Grohl is radiating fatherly pride. In a recent candid conversation, the Foo Fighters frontman opened up about his daughter Violet Grohl’s impending debut album, emphasizing that she achieved this milestone with complete creative autonomy and zero parental intervention.
While appearing alongside his bandmates on The Chris Moyles Show on Radio X, Grohl recounted the moment he discovered his 19-year-old daughter had finished an entire LP and secured a recording contract independently. “Violet collaborated with producer Justin Raisen to create this record, and she did it entirely on her own terms,” Grohl shared enthusiastically.
He explained that while he knew she was frequenting the studio, he remained largely in the dark about the scale of the project. “She would head to the studio daily to write and record, occasionally sending me tracks once they were polished,” he noted. “But I had no hand in the production of this album whatsoever. I was completely oblivious to the details.”
The Nirvana legend admitted that despite his natural inclination to be an involved “stage dad,” Violet surprised him during a casual family meal. “She asked if she could stop by for dinner, and when she arrived, she casually mentioned, ‘I signed my record deal today.’ I was stunned,” he said. “I’m the kind of father who wants to be in the loop for everything, but she is fiercely independent and doing things her own way.”
Violet, who joined the Republic Records roster in January, is the eldest daughter of Dave and his wife, director Jordyn Blum. The couple also shares two younger daughters. This update follows Grohl’s personal announcement in late 2024 regarding the birth of a fourth child, where he expressed a commitment to being a supportive parent while working to repair the bonds of trust within his family.
The timing of Violet’s emergence coincides with a busy season for the Foo Fighters, who are set to release their latest album, Your Favorite Toy, this April. This project follows their 2023 release, But Here We Are. Interestingly, Dave credits Violet’s own musical journey—highlighted by her singles “Nausea,” “THUM,” and “Applefish”—as a primary motivator for his own creative output.
“Her record is truly exceptional; her talent is immense,” Grohl remarked. “Watching her work was the genuine inspiration I needed to get back into the studio for this new Foo Fighters album. She really sparked that fire.”
