Dave Filoni’s first Star Wars series could restore a legendary Sith to official canon

It is a thrilling era for enthusiasts of the galaxy’s most resilient Zabrak. Star Wars: Maul — Shadow Lord, a fresh animated venture from Lucasfilm Animation, is slated to arrive on Disney Plus this April. The series chronicles the former Sith’s ambitious attempts to construct a criminal hegemony on the secluded world of Janix—a territory remarkably beyond the Empire’s reach. Adding to the anticipation, Sam Witwer returns to provide the voice for Maul. Witwer is widely credited with evolving the character from a silent assassin in the films into the complex, Shakespearean antagonist witnessed in The Clone Wars and Rebels.

While the prospect of more Maul is enticing, the fanbase has shifted its focus toward a different potential inclusion: a character currently relegated to the “Legends” continuity. Fans are postulating that the formidable Sith warrior Darth Talon may finally be stepping into the official canon.

Establishing an underworld empire will be a fraught endeavor for Maul. The Shadow Lord teaser reveals he will contend with adversaries such as Two-Boots and Captain Brander Lawson. These figures are also central to Star Wars: Shadow of Maul, a prequel comic arriving in March. Yet, it is the fleeting glimpse of a specific Twi’lek that has sparked the most fervent speculation regarding Darth Talon.

In the footage, we are introduced to Devon Izara, a pink-skinned Twi’lek seen fending off Imperial stormtroopers with a lightsaber. She expresses the exhaustion of a life spent in hiding, while subsequent shots show her bathed in an ominous red glow as Maul’s shadow looms over her.

“I offer you an opportunity,” Maul intones.

Given Devon’s species and the dark mentorship suggested by the trailer, many believe Maul is poised to corrupt her, eventually molding her into a version of the Sith acolyte fans recognize as Talon.

Darth Talon remains one of the most striking figures of the Expanded Universe. Created by John Ostrander and Jan Duursema for the 2006 Star Wars: Legacy series, she was originally the devoted servant of Darth Krayt. Interestingly, her connection to Maul actually originated with George Lucas. The Star Wars creator had initially conceptualized a Maul and Talon partnership for a projected video game that was ultimately shelved. Later, Lucas intended for the duo to serve as the primary antagonists of his own Sequel Trilogy, where an elder Maul would act as a galactic “godfather” and Talon would serve as his enforcer in the vein of Darth Vader.

When Disney acquired Lucasfilm in 2012, those specific narrative threads were abandoned in favor of the stories we see today, though Talon’s visual aesthetic may have subtly informed the design of Kylo Ren. Nevertheless, the curiosity surrounding Lucas’s unrealized vision has never truly faded.

This raises a compelling question: Is Shadow Lord an animated realization of Lucas’s original conceptual framework? The series is spearheaded by Dave Filoni, who was mentored directly by Lucas and has recently ascended to the role of Chief Creative Officer at Lucasfilm. Given Filoni’s history of integrating discarded Lucas concepts into modern projects, it is highly likely he is drawing from his mentor’s early Sequel Trilogy notes.

However, the trailer suggests that if Devon Izara is indeed Talon, her origin will be significantly reimagined. She appears younger and far more vulnerable than the cold assassin of the comics, with many suggesting she may be a survivor of Order 66. Her current trajectory is one of survival rather than Sith ambition.

Still, the transition from a desperate Force-user to a servant of the dark side is a cornerstone of Star Wars storytelling. If Filoni intends to bring Talon into the fold, Devon’s search for purpose makes her the ideal candidate for Maul’s tutelage.
