Critical Role Teases Campaign 4 Lineup: Wolfkin Detective and Plenty of Bards

With less than a month to go before Campaign 4 begins, the Critical Role cast has started dropping hints about their new characters across social platforms. Polygon’s coverage has tracked the build-up.

The ensemble for Campaign 4 reunites series founders Matthew Mercer, Laura Bailey, Marisha Ray, Travis Willingham, Taliesin Jaffe, Ashley Johnson, Liam O’Brien, and Sam Riegel, and adds Luis Carazo, Robbie Daymond, Aabria Iyengar, Whitney Moore, and Alex Ward. Together they’ll journey through Aramán — a setting distinct from Exandria — with acclaimed storyteller Brennan Lee Mulligan serving as the campaign’s Dungeon Master.

Until recently the production has kept plot and character details tightly under wraps. Now, Critical Role posted a puzzle-style teaser that uses emojis to suggest each player’s class, background, and species, inviting fans to decode who will play what.

The emoji puzzles have sparked lively speculation in replies, with many fans matching symbols to potential classes and identities. With a cast of thirteen players, the lineup promises a wide range of distinct characters and playstyles. The campaign will blend official rules from Dungeons & Dragons (2024 edition) with homebrew material developed at Darrington Press by Jeremy Crawford and Chris Perkins, so viewers may see classes or mechanics not previously encountered on the show. Some of the earliest hints read like evocative archetypes: a wolfkin detective rogue, a vampiric or otherwise undead fox-like figure, and at least a pair of bards appear likely based on the emoji set. Those combinations suggest a mix of gothic flair and mischievous mystery that should animate the party in interesting ways.
