Crimson Desert’s Performance on PS5 and Xbox Remains a Mystery

Crimson Desert makes its debut this week, a title carrying the weight of monumental expectations. While the first wave of critiques has arrived, they offer a somewhat skewed perspective. Current reviews are almost exclusively based on the Windows PC build, leaving the performance of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X versions largely unaccounted for.

Media access to the Steam version began in early March, yet Pearl Abyss informed outlets that console keys would remain unavailable until the official launch. This approach is notably unorthodox for a major multiplatform release. While console certification through Microsoft and Sony can occasionally cause delays compared to the more flexible Steam ecosystem, it is standard practice for critics to receive access to all platforms simultaneously to ensure technical transparency.

This selective review cycle has sparked comparisons to the infamous 2020 launch of Cyberpunk 2077. In that scenario, CD Projekt Red restricted reviewers to the PC version, resulting in high praise that masked the nearly unplayable state of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One editions. The subsequent fallout—which included mass refunds and a temporary removal from the PlayStation Store—forced the developer to admit that bypassing console reviews was a fundamental error.

To be fair, Crimson Desert does not appear to be repeating that specific disaster. Technical analysts at Digital Foundry recently evaluated the title on the PS5 Pro, providing a largely positive report. Across three distinct graphical settings—fidelity, performance, and balanced—the game maintained a steady frame rate, only dipping during exceptionally chaotic encounters. The visual complexity, from the behavior of ocean tides to the way smoke interacts with lighting, suggests a high level of polish on high-end hardware.

While base PlayStation 5 hardware has not yet been independently benchmarked by critics, PlayStation Japan recently showcased 20 minutes of gameplay running on the standard console. For the average player, the graphical disparity appears minimal, and the footage suggests a stable experience. However, since this content was produced by the platform holder rather than an objective third party, independent verification remains missing.

When questioned regarding the absence of early console review copies, Pearl Abyss representatives pointed toward the PlayStation Japan demonstration as the primary reference for console performance.

At the time of writing, Crimson Desert holds a score of 79 on Metacritic, derived entirely from PC-based evaluations. Early impressions suggest that while the narrative and the density of the open world may be polarizing, the combat mechanics are a standout achievement. We will continue to monitor and test the game across all platforms as it becomes available to the public.

Crimson Desert launches on March 19 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and PC, with availability rolling out in certain global territories by March 20.
