During Sony’s latest State of Play presentation, the developer pulled back the curtain on the game’s inaugural major expansion, titled Charting the Unknown. True to the spirit of the core experience, the DLC embraces an eccentric blend of contrasting aesthetics, tones, and gameplay styles.

“Reclaim power and reach beyond—into the unknown,” reads the expansion’s official synopsis. “The saga of Pywel continues in Crimson Desert: Charting the Unknown as Kliff, Oongka, and Damiane embark on a quest to uncover their true purpose and dictate their own destinies. Yet, amidst escalating chaos, each hero must carve out a perilous route through the hurdles ahead. Accompany them on this fresh expedition and unearth the boundless possibilities waiting across Pywel.”

The preview begins by teasing a “hidden land” lying beyond the sun-baked sands where countless warriors previously perished—a realm where sorceresses perceive “whispers of darkness steadily gathering strength.” Abruptly, the scene shifts to an urban settlement where protagonist Kliff can construct a residence and customize its interior. From there, the footage accelerates into a whirlwind: Kliff drops to one knee to propose to a witch, adopts the life of a sea captain, soars across the skies on a dragon, and plunges into the ocean depths equipped with retro scuba gear and a jetpack. Viewers also catch glimpses of a massive iron vessel and a character sprinting effortlessly across the waves like an anime deity. Rounding out the spectacle are various fauna-inspired mechs modeled after a dragon, a squid, and a laser-firing crab. The expansion arrives on October 15, with the early 20th-century diving apparatus available as a pre-order bonus.

If any cohesive thread ties this whirlwind of eclectic concepts together, it points toward a fracture within space and time. Such a phenomenon would easily account for the jarring juxtaposition of steampunk machinery, classic galleons, medieval metropolises, and advanced automation.
